Children’s premiere: the performance “Micro/Macro”

The dance performance “Micro/Macro”: the intriguing world of insects

What if we looked into the mysterious world of insects through a powerful magnifying glass?

Kaunas Dance Theatre “Aura”, together with Inga Fontez Sakurako — artistic director of butoh theatre “Okarukas,” visual artist and choreographer — presents a new interdisciplinary dance performance for children, “Micro/Makro”: a journey into nature’s mysterious micro-world, where everything breathes with movement, sound and light.

This is the first butoh dance allegorical performance for children in Lithuania (ages 5+), combining contemporary dance, physical theatre, video projection and electronic music. The performance invites both young and adult audiences to discover the fragility, beauty and mysteries of nature, and at the same time to reflect on the human place on Earth.

Young and old audiences alike are invited to the premiere of the performance in Vilnius:

Rugsėjo 6 dieną 14:00 val. ir 16:00 val. Menų spaustuvėje, Vilniuje

What is “Micro/Macro” about?

This performance tells stories from the world of insects through the language of dance and imagery. Young viewers will see what a spider eats, how caterpillars turn into butterflies, and how insects become enormous, unexpected heroes.

Yet beneath all these images lie important questions: what is the significance of these small creatures to our ecosystem? Is humankind truly the centre of everything? And how can we, as a species, live in harmony with the whole of living nature?

Drawing on ideas from posthumanist philosophy, the performance speaks — in a language children can understand, yet philosophically rich — about metamorphosis, the cycles of life and death, climate change, ecology, and human responsibility in the age of the Anthropocene.

“Micro/Macro” invites audiences to experience nature’s mysteries not through words, but through the language of the body — dance. It portrays the human being, like the insect, as merely a part of nature — yet it is humanity that bears the greatest responsibility for the planet’s future.

An ecology lesson without words — through dance and imagination

“Micro/Macro” is created for children aged 5–10, their parents, guardians, teachers and educators. Here, movement and imagery speak louder than words, allowing audiences of any language to understand and enjoy the performance equally.

The performance nurtures a love for nature and respect for all forms of life. Rather than a dry lecture, it is a living, imagination-sparking story that helps children understand why protecting the planet matters, while fostering empathy and ecological awareness.

“Micro/Macro” is an artistic synthesis where contemporary dance, ecology and child psychology meet. An experience like this has never before been seen on the Lithuanian children’s theatre stage.

Even the smallest creatures hold immense significance for the balance of the whole world

The performance creates a space where dancers, objects, puppets and video projections merge into a living whole. Here, light, shadow and sound become a bridge between the real world and the world of imagination.

“Micro/Macro” is an emotional and educational adventure that brings together art, ecology and humanity. It will not only enrich children’s cultural world, but also invite the whole family to pause for a moment, breathe in, and simply feel.
