Birutė Letukaitė (Lithuania)
The compositional whole of M. K. Čiurlionis’ symphony “Sea” (1903 – 1906) is characterized by its philosophical subtext, vivid images of nature and psychological content. “The image of the sea, which has long attracted the composer, emerged as a symbol of a life purified and exalted in struggles; an active force, tragically breaking and solemnly resurrecting, addressed the despised value of man, calling for a rise against the vices and oppression of the age.” (Vytautas Landsbergis)
For choreographer Birute Letukaitė, M.K. Čiurlionis’ “Sea” became the main metaphor for talking about the changed relationship between modern man and nature, about the pains of today: the Baltic Sea polluted with toxic substances and a society polluted by phobias, selfishness and apathy. The disturbed balance of nature and man brings mutual irreversible losses.
“Scientists have long studied and determined that the Baltic Sea is the most chemically polluted sea in the world, that fish caught in it cannot be eaten […] The Baltic Sea is the most radioactive not only among the seas, but also the most radioactive body of water in the world in general.” (ELTA)
“What are you complaining about, sea?”, the composer asked more than 100 years ago, as if anticipating the future lament of the Baltic.
The project is funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
